Does Your Coaching Model Measure Up?

It is often said that coaching takes place between two motivated individuals. The coach, motivated by their passion to help clients reach their full potential, and the client, motivated by the need for guidance to scale an obstacle or reach an objective.

Getting to the moment when real coaching can begin, when the clutter that keeps the client from learning and growing has been swept away, can take months. But it doesn’t have to.

Whether you are new to coaching or a seasoned veteran, the right coaching model can assist you in learning a great deal about your client in a relatively short period of time, enabling you to apply your unique skills to your client’s situation with clarity, effectiveness, and outstanding results.

An effective and efficient coaching model should deliver on these six critical components during your first couple of sessions.

Does your client have a good sense of what they want their life to look like? Beyond the initial reason that prompted the client to engage you as their coach, what do they want from life moving forward? What are their dreams and aspirations?

Knowing how the client envisions their future or if they envision a future at all, tells you a great deal about the client’s personality and frame of mind. This level of knowledge about the client not only informs the direction of the coaching process but also serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path toward their desired future.

Help Process Life Events

How does your client process life events? Are they skilled at learning lessons from life’s ups and downs or do they struggle to make sense of them? Learning how a client reflects on past events allows a coach to gain valuable insights into their thought processes, emotional responses, and behavioral patterns, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of the coaching process and promoting the client\’s personal and professional development.

It’s important to get an indication of the client’s mindset. What are the beliefs that shape the way they make sense of the world and themselves? What actions and beliefs seem to hold them back? Do they cling to beliefs that limit their ability to succeed or do they have an empowering way of seeing themselves?

Gaining a deep understanding of the client’s mindset as early as possible in the coaching engagement helps to establish rapport and trust, enables you to customize your approach to each client, and sets the stage for helping the client develop a mindset that positively propels them forward.

Take A Holistic Approach

How many hats does your client wear? Conducting an inventory of all the roles and responsibilities they have is important if you are going to coach your client holistically and address their most important life issues. Clients often come to us with concerns about one area of life but that concern may simply be a symptom of something much bigger or deeper. A whole life review will give you the magnifying glass you need to get closer to what is really going on.

Identify Values – The Source of Motivation

Before you attempt to set goals with your client, it’s important to have them explore and articulate their values. Values are especially critical in setting goals because they provide the foundation for decision-making and actions. Whether consciously or unconsciously, all decisions are made based on what we value most in life.

Goals aligned with personal values are more likely to keep your client feeling motivated, fulfilled, and committed to achieving them. When goals are in harmony with core values, there is a higher likelihood of consistency, authenticity, and long-term fulfillment in reaching those goals.

Set Goals That Feel Like Gifts

When it comes to setting goals for the coaching engagement, don’t shortchange the process. Take the time to help the client create goals that specifically state the result they are looking to reach and the reason why the client wants to achieve them. Include the “why” in the wording of the goal. Once achieved, the goal will feel like a gift they have given themselves.

Setting smart goals that motivate a client to achieve them can be challenging and time-consuming unless your coaching model includes the previous five elements. Help clients clearly define what they truly want to accomplish by encouraging them to reflect on their vision and values, address all their roles and responsibilities, and understand why they want to reach each goal.

Hit The Ground Running

Think about your last client or one you are currently coaching. How long did it take before you felt you had a good understanding of who your client was, their mindset, beliefs, and values? How long before you were able to understand their source of motivation and the why behind their goals   Days? Weeks? Months?  Imagine gaining this understanding in a matter of hours rather than months.

Finding a coaching method designed to get to the heart of who your client is in the shortest amount of time possible allows you to hit the ground running. You can immediately focus on strategies and interventions that are most likely to yield results and accelerate your client\’s progress toward their goals.
