Questions are a powerful tool used by coaches to guide their clients through a process of self-exploration, problem-solving, and growth, ultimately leading to positive and sustainable changes in their lives. Coaches often rely on their intuition to ask their clients questions and they also use questioning to confirm or clarify their clients’ intuition. Questioning and intuition are closely interconnected in the coaching process.
Intuition provides coaches with valuable insights and hunches, but it may not always be based on the complete picture. Skillful questioning helps clarify these intuitive impressions, allowing coaches to gain a deeper understanding of the client\’s situation.
During the coaching process develop your intuition and that of your clients by using your questioning skills to:
Uncover Unconscious Patterns: Intuition often taps into the subconscious mind where many deep-rooted beliefs and patterns reside. Thoughtful questioning can help bring these patterns to the surface, enabling the coach and client to explore them more deeply.
Empower the Client: Instead of telling the client what to do based on your intuition, use effective questioning to empower the client to explore their own thoughts, feelings, and options. This active engagement helps clients take ownership of their decisions and actions and gets them in the habit of paying attention to their inner voice.
Tailor Your Coaching Approach: Intuition can lead coaches to personal insights about their clients, but the application of these insights requires a tailored approach. Asking the right questions allows coaches to adapt their coaching style to suit the individual needs and preferences of each client.
Overcome Personal Bias: A coach, like anyone else, can have biases that influence their intuitive perceptions. When faced with a coaching situation, question your initial reactions and judgments. Investigate whether they are based on objective evidence or if they stem from personal biases. If you notice yourself making assumptions or feeling biased, take a moment to pause and reflect on the underlying reasons for your reactions.
Build Trust and Rapport: Thoughtful questioning demonstrates genuine interest and active listening, which fosters trust and rapport between the coach and client. This trusting relationship is essential for clients to feel comfortable sharing their intuitive perceptions with their coach.
Set goals and monitor progress: Intuition can help clients identify goals that truly align with their inner desires, values, and passions. Sometimes, people have intuitive feelings about what they really want to achieve, even if they cannot logically explain it at first. Asking questions helps to clarify and refine client goals and create actionable steps. Additionally, questions facilitate progress monitoring, allowing coaches and clients to track the journey and make adjustments as needed. As a coach, becoming an expert at asking questions will serve you well in every part of the coaching process.
Encourage Reflection: Skillful questioning prompts clients to reflect on their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This reflective process often leads to valuable self-discovery and personal growth.
Explore Resistance: Clients may sometimes resist certain topics or ideas that arise during coaching. Questions can gently explore the source of this resistance, helping clients overcome obstacles and move forward. You may not hear the answer to your question in the current coaching session, but it has been our experience that a client will return for a follow-up session and say something like, “I have been thinking about a question you asked me and…”
Create Breakthrough Moments: You all know how we love our AHA moments. A well-timed and thought-provoking question can lead to powerful breakthrough moments for clients, helping them gain fresh perspectives and create positive change.
By combining your intuitive insights with skillful questioning, you can provide a more comprehensive and effective coaching experience for your clients. By comprehensive we mean the opportunity for personal transformation and sustained positive change. Not just a blip on the radar screen but real life-changing transformation.
The following are examples of how you might combine intuition and skillful questioning to result in deeper coaching experiences for your clients:
Effective questioning stimulates reflection, which is a key component of intuitive development. Thought-provoking questions encourage individuals to delve deeper into their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, enabling them to access their intuitive insights and tap into their inner wisdom. Questions to consider:
- Describe a time when you acted on your intuition. What was the outcome?
- Look back on recurring patterns in your life (finances, relationships, work/life balance, etc.). What does your intuition tell you about these patterns?
Questions expand awareness by inviting individuals to explore beyond their immediate perceptions and consider different perspectives. This expanded awareness allows for a broader and more nuanced understanding of a situation, enabling the intuition to surface and provide additional insights. Questions to consider:
- What is another perspective you might consider in this situation?
- If you were to look at this situation from someone else’s perspective, what additional insights might you gain?
Well-crafted questions challenge assumptions and belief systems that may limit intuitive thinking. By encouraging individuals to question their own assumptions and explore alternative possibilities, questioning opens space for fresh insights and intuitive breakthroughs. Questions to consider:
- What assumptions might be influencing your current view of the situation?
- How would you see this situation differently if you let go of these assumptions?
Skillful questioning helps uncover underlying motivations, values, and desires. By probing deeper with questions, coaches can support individuals in understanding the core drivers behind their thoughts and actions. This self-awareness is essential for developing intuition, and fostering transformation as it helps individuals align their intuitive insights with their authentic selves. Questions to consider:
- What values or passions are driving your thoughts and actions in this situation?
- Recall a time when you made a decision that truly reflected your core values. How much confidence did you have in that decision?
Through the process of answering thoughtful questions, individuals develop a deeper sense of self-trust. As they engage in self-reflection and uncover their own intuitive insights, they gain confidence in their ability to access and rely on their intuition. This self-trust empowers individuals to make decisions aligned with their intuition. Questions to consider:
- What does your intuition tell you about this situation, and how confident do you feel about this insight?
- Think back and tell me about a time when trusting your intuition led to a positive outcome?
Intuitive insights often emerge as fragments or glimpses that need to be integrated into a coherent whole. Skillful questioning helps individuals bring together these fragments and integrate their intuitive insights with other aspects of their thinking, such as logic and reasoning. This integration allows for a more comprehensive decision-making process. Questions to consider:
- When you review the facts and data you have, what does your intuition tell you?
- What logical steps could you take to act upon your intuitive insight?
The feedback loop created by questioning supports the refinement and development of intuition. As individuals respond to questions and receive feedback, they gain insight into the accuracy and effectiveness of their intuitive insights. This iterative process helps hone and sharpen their intuition over time. Questions to consider:
- Looking back at the decisions you\’ve made based on your intuition, have they led you closer to or further from your goals?
- What have you learned about your intuitive insights that you can apply moving forward?
It\’s important to note that the quality and nature of the questions play a significant role in the development of intuition. Thoughtful, open-ended, and exploratory questions that encourage deep reflection and self-inquiry are particularly effective in nurturing and harnessing intuition. Coaches who skillfully employ questioning techniques can support individuals in accessing and developing their intuition, leading to greater self-awareness, empowered decision-making, and personal growth.
Now that you have been introduced to the role of questioning in the intuitive and indeed the transformational process, take a few moments to review the questions we have prepared for each category above. Then add one or two questions that you would add to the list.
Keep this list handy and begin integrating these questions into your coaching process where appropriate to develop your client’s ability to tap into their intuition and develop it further.
As coaches who seek sustained and positive change for our clients, we believe that developing and applying finely tuned questioning skills makes all the difference in our client’s results. By thoughtfully crafting questions designed to help stimulate your client’s intuition you will help them access and further develop their intuition while fostering transformational change.
